President Gamble
I have to say I am a huge fan of president Gamble. Not only is he a great guy, but has done a lot for the progression of MSU as a school. Perhaps one of the coolest opportunities I have had on campus was to go to dinner at Gambles house last week for advocats, and any other student involved with leadership on campus. We are all sad to say that president Gamble has announced his retirement, effective as soon as they find a replacement for him. He came and spoke to our advocat class the day after the dinner at his house and let us know about his plans, as well as where he hopes to leave the campus, and the paths he is going to leave open for development. I am confident that the school will pick a qualified replacement, but we will all be sad to see him go.
The New Rock Wall
Anyone who has visited MSU in the last year has probababaly heard someone on campus boast about our beautiful fitness center that was recently renovated. It is awesome, and I suggest that if you are on campus you do take advantage of the weights, cardio equipment, fitness classes, pool, tennis/ racquetball courts, basketball courts, massages, and the new rock wall. To ad to the glory in which the gym possesses they recently added a new rock climbing wall to replace the older wall in Romney gym. It is just another thing that makes the gym one of the coolest places on campus. Whether you have a lot of experience climbing or have never climbed before, you are welcome to climb on the wall after you go through a few of the basics with someone who is a qualified climber. I hope to take full advantage of the rock wall throughout my remaining years in Bozeman.
Kal Penn
I am sure everyone has seen one of the Harold and Kumar movies, or seen Kal Penn on the hit show “House”. Yep, he is both the rebellious cannabis loving character Kumar, and the goofy determined doctor on House. As much as we all love the characters in which Kal Penn plays, he is currently stepping away from acting to work for the Obama Campaign as a public liaison. The week that his character on house was killed, Kal Penn made an appearance at MSU to give a lecture that was put on by the leadership institute. I was very impressed with his lecture, despite the character that he is best known as on television he is in reality a very educated, and politically correct individual (he also made sure to clarify that he does not do drugs). His lecture was an interesting connection to entertainment and the role race plays in the media, especially under represented races like south-Asian Islanders. I suggest that if anyone ever has a chance to see him speak, do not take the opportunity lightly. My roommate and I had a chance to speak with him after his speech and were very pleased to find that he is just a regular guy, and a very amiable down-to-earth individual.

A change of Pace
Until a few weeks ago, I was on the path to becoming a Graphic Designer/ Art Director. In addition to my Graphic Design Major I was also pursuing a minor in business entrepreneurship. Since I was seventeen, I had myself convinced that this was what I wanted to do with my life; I had placed all my eggs in the Graphic Design basket. One thing that is a reality at MSU as well as most universities with a positive academic reputation there are some majors in which you must go through a gate to continue your current curriculum. Graphic Design is one of those majors. Myself and half of the other students who applied to continue studying graphic design were denied admittance to the program based on the portfolios we produced for review. Rejection is never a fun experience for anyone; it is hard to be cut from your major. I had the option to continue with graphic design by repeating the courses that I took this year and re-applying for portfolio review. This is an option, and one that was suggested to me by both professors and upper level students in the design program.
After a week of thorough consideration I came to the conclusion that what I had wanted when I was seventeen was different than what I want now. Although part of me will always love the arts and graphic design, it was no longer where I wanted to be. Over the years I had gathered interest in nutrition, exercise, and human performance. That interest grew into a monster, and opened up to me the idea of studying Kinesiology (the movement of Muscles, and performance) here at MSU. With Kinesiology I will have several options after I graduate and I am very excited to partake in a new course load.
Although rejection in a sour experience it is important to keep positive. I feel that when one door closes, another opens and presents just as many opportunities.

Fitness in Montana
As you can imagine, Bozeman being the outdoor and active place that is hosts a very varied fitness scene. I am sure anyone interested in MSU has heard about our gym. The gym is out of control, Brand new state of the art everything, including building design, and 100’s of different light fixtures. The gym formally known as the “Hosaues Recreational center” holds a variety of weights, cardio equipment, basketball courts, a swimming pool, racquet and tennis ball courts, Massages, and various fitness classes. It seems to good to be true. The Ridge is another gym in Bozeman that is known for its fancy atmosphere, which has recently been challenged with the opening of two 24-hour gyms. In addition to the gyms, Bozeman certainly holds a population of runners, bicyclists, and triathletes. MSU has both varsity track and cross country teams for anyone interested in running. MSU also has a cycling club, and a triathlon club for anyone interested in those sports. The newest craze to hit Bozeman is Crossfit. Crossfit is popular amongst the outdoor crowd, and also the workout that the “Spartans” of 300 used to achieve their Spartan Physiques. So for those folks who are health minded, and fit individuals Bozeman offers a wide array of options.
The sound of Bozeman
Following my analysis on the food scene in Bozeman I have to talk about the music. First of all MSU’s Brick Breeden field house hosts some awesome performers, last year we were graced with the presence of Ben Folds, Elton John, The Blueman Group, Chicago, and Carrie Underwood. If those names don’t mean a whole lot to some readers lets also keep in mind that Bob Dylan, John Mayer, and Snoop Dogg have all performed at the field house as well. In addition to the fieldhouse downtown hosts a series of concerts called “music on main” which takes place for 8 weeks on Thursday night from early July to late August. MSU also hosts the ASMSU concert series, which are shows performed by local or student bands either on the main mall, or in the sub. Bozeman has some great shows. One show that I recently went to was “Girl Talk” a DJ who remixes a lot of different music to put on a show where everyone can dance, I wasn’t that into it originally, but I have never seen so many people dancing and having a good time to remixed music like that. What a good time.
